The added advantage for many of the overseas patients coming to South Africa is that the cost of medical treatment in South Africa is relatively reasonable. Foreign currencies compare very favourably against the South African Rand.

How to qualify for the Medical Treatment Visa

One of the most important criteria to qualify for the medical treatment visa is to get a letter from the medical practitioner or institution in South Africa confirming;

  • There is space available at the relevant medical institution;
  • An estimate of the cost of medical treatment;
  • Whether or not the disease or ailment is treatable or curable;
  • The schedule of treatment for the overseas patient;
  • The period that it will take to treat the patient in South Africa.

The applicant will also need confirmation from the person or institution responsible for the medical expenses and hospital fees. If a medical aid or employer is not liable for the medical expenses incurred, the applicant will need to show proof of financial means to cover medical costs.
